West Coast Classic Cougar

April 29, 2019

This is a very original, unrestored 1967 Mercury Cougar XR-7 “Dan Gurney Special,” and we felt it was the perfect candidate to use for another “what to look for” video. When you know what the genuine article looks like, it helps to detect repairs, replacement parts, and other non-original items on similar cars you may inspect as a prospective buyer. We hope this helps you in your quest for Cougar knowledge!

Mercury Cougar 50th Anniversary Weekend – Dearborn, MI – June 2017

West Coast Classic Cougar

June 20, 2017

We’re so glad we were able to attend this event! It was a once-in-a-lifetime celebration of the Mercury Cougar, and by far the biggest Cougar show we’ve ever been to. It was hard to capture everything that happened that weekend (which extended from Friday-Monday), we were so caught up with all the activities and socializing with friends and customers. This video is just a glimpse at the main events: the cruise on Saturday with over 100 Cougars, and the show on Sunday with over 200 Cougars! Thanks again to the CATS club and the Cougar Club Of America for all their hard work in putting this together. We had a great time.

Cougar Buying Guide Ep.4 – 1973 XR-7 Convertible

West Coast Classic Cougar

August 7, 2015

In this video, Don goes over a low-mileage, almost entirely original example of a 1973 Mercury Cougar XR-7 convertible. Much of the information here also applies to hardtops and 1971-72 cars. He talks about unique 1973 parts that are hard to find, and some of the areas on the car to check for rust and damage. Basically the theme of this video is: the 1971-73 Cougars can be great drivers on a budget, but don’t expect it to be easy to fully restore one to “perfect” status.

Cougar Buying Guide Ep.3 – 1968 XR-7 390 “Barn Find”

West Coast Classic Cougar

April 22, 2015

In this video, Don goes over a 1968 Mercury Cougar XR-7 in brutal detail, looking at originality, searching for rust, inspecting the interior and engine bay, and more. This car exhibits a lot of pros and cons that you might run across when looking at buying a classic Cougar yourself. We felt that the “pros” pretty much speak for themselves; it’s a very attractive car, great color combination, good options, good condition, and a big block 390 that runs great. With that in mind, we spent most of the video picking on all the little negatives that you might not have noticed otherwise.

Muscle Car Of The Week Video #59: 1968 Mercury Cougar GT-E 427

Muscle Car Of The Week

August 4, 2014

This week, we’re bringing you an often overlooked muscle car, the 1968 Mercury Cougar GT-E. These were sporty but comfortable, and the GT-E bought you a 7-liter V8 to make things interesting. Most were the smooth 428 V8, but some were ordered with the far less subtle 427 side oiler… like the one in this video. The 427 was rated at 390 HP and has a great rumble, but the car is refined enough to drive and enjoy every day. The Brothers Collection is home to several rare Mercury cats, this is one of the favorites!

Muscle Car Of The Week Video #37: 1969 Mercury Cougar XR-7 Cobra Jet 428

Muscle Car Of The Week

February 27, 2014

In 1969, you could walk in to your local Mercury dealer and rumble out behind the wheel of a Cougar XR-7 Cobra Jet 428 and win street races without attracting the attention of the local fuzz. The ’69 XR-7 CJ428 is a 335 HP / 440 TQ tire-burner with subtle European design flair. The Brothers Collection is home to many bright and loud Muscle Cars, but this one is an example of speaking softly and carrying a big V8!

The Story Of Cougar 1: The First Mercury Cougar

West Coast Classic Cougar

Oct 31, 2013
A while back, we sat down with Jim Pinkerton, the owner of the very first production Mercury Cougar (1967 model year), a.k.a. Cougar 1. We hit the “record” button on our cameras and he let loose with an epic tale of how the car was first sold in Canada, its subsequent life there, and how it eventually got into his hands – an intriguing story! He also goes over some of the unique features of the car, and some of the restoration techniques used. It’s a truly beautiful factory show car with more attention to detail than the “average” Cougar. Special thanks to Jim Pinkerton for his time, and for providing most of the images you see in this video from his own collection of Cougar memorabilia.

Cougar Buying Guide Ep.2 – 1967 XR-7 289

West Coast Classic Cougar

June 15, 2013

In this video, Don does a detailed inspection on a 1967 Mercury Cougar XR-7 to show some of the things you should look for when buying one of these classic cars. Some of the insight here can potentially save you hundreds, even thousands, when you go to negotiate with a seller. Also, it will help those of you trying to sell, to more accurately advertise the strengths and weaknesses of your car.

Cougar Buying Guide Ep.1 – 1970 XR-7 Convertible 428 CJ

West Coast Classic Cougar

April 11, 2013

Having recently bought a 1970 Mercury Cougar XR7 Convertible with a 428 Cobra Jet, Don started going over the car with a fine-toothed comb and discovered a few things he didn’t notice when he first inspected the car with the seller. This was the inspiration for this video, in which we spend some time looking at some of the details, like a forensics team, to find out some important details about this car (both good and bad).
