1969 Cougar Sport Special
Written by Bruce Wallace
The 1969 Mercury Cougar Sports Special was an option package offered on Standard Hardtops only. The basic package came with five exterior features.

The Sports Special Option was a mid-year promotion. The earliest confirmed Sports Special Bruce Wallace has in the Registry was built in January of 1969, although some old records from Phil Parcels’ data has one reported in October and another in November of 1968.
The Sports Special was not Cougar specific. There were also Montego and Marauder Sport Specials for 1969.
Shelby Check Cloth and Vinyl Trim Option
Cost: $19.50
For a short period of time, a little known trim option was offered on the 1969 Cougar. The Shelby Check Cloth and Vinyl Trim option came in two trim colors and was limited to the seats only. The January 13, 1969 Product Order Book does not list this option. The 1969 Color and Trim book at West Coast Classic Cougar has a “peel and stick” addition for this trim, placed on the page after the book was printed. We were only able to get a price for this option from a window sticker.
Available on Standard and XR-7 Hardtops. The Decor Option is not mandatory for this option. A point of interest, most of the Cougars in the National Database with this option also have the Sports Special option.
